Paper and cardboard should be bundled, while plastic, glass and metal can be comingled in one container.
Vehicle Tags
Vehicle tags are required in Brookfield. Tags are issued annually and must be displayed by June 30. New residents have a 30-day grace period in which to purchase their vehicle tags. A renewal form or proof of residency and vehicle registration are required for each purchase.
Vehicle tags can be renewed by mail, via the 24-hour drop box, or in person at Village Hall. Landlords are responsible for notifying their tenants of the need for vehicle tags. Seniors 65 or older at the time of purchase qualify for a reduced-rate vehicle tag. To take advantage of this offer, seniors must provide proof of age at the time of purchase.
There is a limit of one reduced-rate vehicle tag per household.
Snow Removal and Street Cleaning
Brookfield snow regulations are in effect from Dec. 1 to March 31 of each year. After a snowfall of 2 inches or more, residents can check the signs on their block to see on what day and which side of the street they should park. Parking violators are subject to a $20 ticket for each occurrence. Please use your garage or driveway whenever possible.
Street cleaning begins April 1 and ends Nov. 30 of each year. Residents can check the signs on their block to see on what day and which side of the street they should park. Parking violators are subject to a $20 ticket per each occurrence.
Animal Licenses
Dogs and cats must be licensed in Brookfield. Tags are $3 each and are issued upon presentation of a rabies certificate. There is limit of three animals per household. All dogs and cats are to be leashed and owners must pick up after their pets.
Business Licenses
Business license applications can be picked up from either the Building Department or the Cashier's Office. Inspections and license approvals are issued through the Building Department. Existing businesses must renew their license yearly before the Dec. 31 deadline.
Garage Sales
Garage sale permits are issued by the cashier’s office. The permit fee is $2 and is valid for up to three consecutive days. Garage sales are limited to the hours of 9 a.m. through 6 p.m. Residents may have two garage sales per year.
Tree Planting Program
The Forestry Division runs a Shared Cost Tree Planting program each year. Trees are generally two inches in diameter and six to ten feet tall and are planted in the parkway area. Residents interested in this program can contact the Village to determine the current possible varieties and planting costs. No private planting of trees or shrubs in parkway areas is allowed without a permit. The Village works to maintain an appropriate variety of species, proper distance between trees and ensures that trees are not planted too close to wires or sewer lines.
Sidewalk Replacement
Property owners with main sidewalks in front of their homes, apartments and/or businesses are eligible to participate in the shared-cost sidewalk program. In the case of the shared-cost program, if a square of sidewalk need to be placed, by the village and the homeowner share the cost. Requests are taken yearly on a "first come, first served" basis.
No-Tag Yard Waste Program
Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the no-tag yard waste program for one and two family dwellings. Brush, grass clippings and leaves can be placed in Kraft paper lawn waste bags or in properly marked yard waste containers. Landscape waste is picked up by the refuse hauler on the designated garbage collection day.
Building Permits
Brookfield requires building permits for all projects and renovations inside and outside your property. These permits should contain drawings, if necessary, and a material list. If a contractor is involved, we need a copy of the contract.
Building Codes and Ordinanaces
Brookfield has adopted building codes from multiple sources and has ordinances for property maintenance. All of this information is available for viewing at the Village hall or the Library.
