Get informed on church project
THE LANDMARK VIEW
Assuming that a proposed church at the corner of Grand Boulevard and Washington Avenue gets approved by the Brookfield village board, it will be the biggest development effort at Eight Corners in more than a decade and one of the biggest in the past half century.

Finally, a done deal
THE LANDMARK VIEW
Up until Aug. 20 there was a lot of good will but a lack of solid foundation for believing that the Arcade Building in Riverside was on the road to reclamation. With news that the deal is finally sealed, Riverside residents can officially stop holding their breath.

More class time a good thing
THE LANDMARK VIEW
At Komarek School, there are parents upset with the school board and administration over the elimination of a half-hour recess period after lunch. From what we hear, there's an online petition making its way around e-mail lists and will be presented to the school board as a form of protest in the near future.

A model for the future
THE LANDMARK VIEW
Whenever teachers and school districts in Cook County ink a contract, the quotes are inevitable. It was a win-win, a collaborative process. In almost every instance, the quotes refer to the two sides in a vacuum. Just how the contracts address the issues of those paying the salaries is often not part of the equation.

A middle ground on stickers
No one likes paying taxes. And certainly no one likes being audited and then finding out there are even more taxes to pay. Penalties even. Dawn of a new era
THE LANDMARK VIEW
What's to become of recreation in Riverside if village trustees make good on their positions stated Monday and replace the recreation board with an advisory commission? It's impossible to say.

Easing fears
THE LANDMARK VIEW
After not having experienced a homicide in Brookfield for a decade, it has come as quite a shock that the village has witnessed two murders in the span of a month. Both were vicious, cold-blooded killings leaving dead two people who made an impact on the lives of local residents.

Pulling Forest Creek from the brink
THE LANDMARK VIEW
When the Landmark started reporting on the bank foreclosing on the Forest Creek condos 17 months ago, we assumed that the village of Brookfield was in for a protracted property maintenance nightmare. Would the building even remain standing given the outlook of the real estate market? A few more winters exposed to the elements and the building could have been irreparably damaged.

The 500-pound gorilla in the room
THE LANDMARK VIEW
For as long as there has been a Brookfield Zoo, politicians in the village of Brookfield have been talking about how the municipality can leverage the tourist attraction for its own benefit.

How schools can help
THE LANDMARK VIEW
Well, the great crossing guard burden-sharing experiment has ended before it got a chance to start. After a second attempt at convincing Riverside District 96 to see the issue as a "community" rather than a "Riverside village government" responsibility, the discussion is officially over.
